The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year from across the UK. Based in Manchester, it provides specialist cancer treatment including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and highly specialist surgery.
The Brief
As lead designer on The Christie account at Music agency, I worked closely with their marketing team on projects spanning the full breadth of the brand. This included designing assets for print and digital fundraising campaigns, producing patient brochures and information leaflets, and advising the in-house design team on brand application. The most significant project was leading the creative direction and installation of internal graphics for the new Proton Beam Therapy Centre, a pioneering cancer treatment facility.
The Solution
Working closely with clinical staff and facilities teams, I developed and pitched a "jungle journey" graphic concept designed to comfort and distract young patients and their families as they moved from waiting areas through treatment rooms to the ward. The environment needed to feel calming and engaging whilst meeting strict clinical requirements.
I commissioned local illustrator Jane Bowyer and collaborated with her and The Christie team to develop artwork that met all clinical specifications and installation timelines. The large-scale environmental graphics transformed the clinical space into an immersive, patient-focused environment that eased anxiety for children undergoing treatment.
The Impact
The installation was praised by staff, patients and families, and received recognition from multiple award bodies and design publications including Fresh Awards, The Drum Awards and Brand Impact Awards. It became a standout project for the agency and demonstrated how thoughtful design can genuinely improve patient experience in healthcare settings.
